The biggest college basketball game on the board this entire week and maybe the entire month is Thursday’s Gonzaga/Kansas matchup. The Jayhawks and Bulldogs finished last season ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the polls.
A potential showdown in the NCAA Tournament Final Four or title game was wiped away as the event was called off because of coronavirus safety precautions. The Jayhawks and Bulldogs will meet to open this season on Thanksgiving Day at the Fort Myers Tip-Off in Florida. What’s on the line is a bit different but still very significant.
Gonzaga, which went 31-2 last season, enters this campaign at No. 1 in the preseason poll, while Kansas which was 28-3 is ranked sixth in the nation. The Bulldogs lost forward Filip Petrusev, last season's West Coast Conference Player of the Year.
Reports are that this team is even more talented than last year’s squad. They picked up Jalen Suggs, one of the highest-rated recruits in the land to accompany some of college hoops best returning players.
The Jayhawks lost big man Udoka Azubuike and point guard Devon Dotson. They have recruited some of the most talked-about new faces and brought in a big-name transfer to compliment one of the nation’s best overall teams. They have a monster defense and some intelligent accurate shooters.
Both coaches are smart and excellent at preparing their players. Please understand the public has already jumped on Gonzaga, moving the line from a -1.5 up to -4 as of Wednesday late-afternoon. They will continue to move on the preseason fav as they always do.
As a contrarian, I have made a successful career and have won more NCAAB handicapping titles than just about anyone in the history of this business. Two baskets are a high price for the Bulldogs to lay in their season-opener against a well-disciplined team like the Jayhawks, which certainly aren’t intimidated by them.
Gonzaga is 1-5 ATS the last six-game splayed on a neutral site while Kansas is 9-4 ATS the last 13 games played on a neutral site. This early in the season, I must take the points with the Jayhawks.
One thing you can count on is that following a proven college basketball handicapper like myself, right here at DON BEST, will bring you a successful and enjoyable NCAAB campaign. I posted an NCAAB 50% OFF FLASH SALE on the entire season.
