NBA Total Wins

By: Jim Feist | Thursday, October 11, 2018

The NBA season begins on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 and that means daily betting opportunities again.  The NBA did change a rule this year and that is in respect to an offensive rebound. Now, when a team grabs an offensive rebound, the shot clock will be reset to 14 seconds from the previous 24 seconds.  Why did they do this? The NBA believes this will increase shot attempts. We'll see. Now lets take a quick look at the NBA teams and their win totals.  I have singled out some select teams that I expect to be better or worse this year and what I expect them to do versus that total win number.   The total wins are next to the club and my over or under is based on that number.

Atlanta Hawks 23.5 - The Hawks selected Trae Young in the draft, to the surprise of many. The Hawks really didn't help themselves with this selection, in fact they passed on players that could have made them better. Just another move in a string of bad moves by this club. UNDER

Boston Celtics 57.5 - The Celtics had a great season last year, despite numerous injuries. The Club finished 2nd in the East and had to play without their top two players for quite a bit of that season. Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving are back, plus they have some key young players in supporting role. I look for the Celtics to be possibly the beast of the East this year. OVER the total.

Brooklyn Nets 32.5 - The best thing you can say about this club is D'Angelo Russell, who is a true NBA superstar. Is that enough to help them out this year? I don't think so. There just isn't enough help for Russell and I see this team struggling again this season. UNDER.

Cleveland Cavaliers 30.5 - Let's face it, how can you not go down after losing Lebron James. They did get Colton Sexton from Alabama, who looks to be a excellent point guard. However, this team lost its soul when James departed. They will not be as bad though as experts are predicting. This could be a steal of a number here as this team could still rally for a decent season, just not up to the standards of the James era. Play OVER.

Denver Nuggets 47.5 - Some say the Nuggets got a steal in the draft in the person of Michael Porter. They also added Isaiah Thomas and resigned their star young center, Nikola Jokic. Jokic is one of the NBA's top young players.  Now the Nuggets are adding some supporting cast around him. I look for Denver to be one of the most improved teams in the West this year. OVER the total.

Houston Rockets 54.5 - Houston is returning mostly the same cast from that outstanding 2017-18 club. The only difference is that the West has improved with LeBron coming over and a few other teams improving. That will mean more competition for the Rockets. Houston will still contend for the top spot in the West, but don't look for quite as good a season as last year. UNDER the total.

Indiana Pacers 47.5 - OVER. The Pacers traded Paul George, but actually improved. This team should be a top contender in the East.

Los Angeles Clippers 35.5 - The Clippers were once an elite team in the West Conference. Those days are gone with so many of their star players have departed.  The Clippers obviously in a rebuilding mode and while they have some young talent, I don't see this team doing much this season. Play UNDER the total.

Los Angeles Lakers 48.5 - The biggest news in LA is the arrival of LeBron James. The Lakers have been down for several years now and this will infuse them along with Rajon Rondo coming over from New Orleans. Will they win the West? Not sure about that, but they will be better. This is still overall a young team, but the addition of Rondo and James, both of whom have a lot of playoff experience, will only help this team grow.  Only time will tell how James will affect this club. Next year may also see the arrival of Kawhi Leonard, who will be a free agent after this season.  For now, UNDER the total and that's only because the oddsmakers always over value the Lakers.

Milwaukee Bucks 46.5 - His name may be hard to say or spell, but Giannis Antetokounmpo, aka the "Greek Freak," is the heart and soul of this team. This team will be a contender if this guy is in the house. They need to solidify the supporting staff around him to be a true East contender, but they could finish in the top echelon of the East with just a few key moves. OVER the Total.

Minnesota Timberwolves 44.5 - Yes, Minnesota made the playoffs last year for the first time in 13 years. However, there have been some contention on this team, especially from Jimmy Butler. I don't expect this team to be as good in 2018-19. UNDER the Total.

Sacramento Kings 25.5 - When you are in the outhouse of the West, there really isn't anywhere to go but up.  The Kings have made some decent moves and look to be building for the future. Will it help them this year? Probably not, but they should be a bit better than that 25.5 win total. OVER the total.

San Antonio Spurs 43.5 - When you think of the NBA West, you must think of San Antonio. They have been a staple of the West for so long, it's hard to fathom the club on a downward trend. They have a great coach who will get the most out of this club, but the Kawhi Leonard issues will hurt them. The Spurs traded Leonard and Green to Toronto for DeMar DeRozan and a first-round pick.  I look for this club to be down this year and that means UNDER their total.

Toronto Raptors 54.5 - Toronto had a great season last year; too bad they didn't do all that well in the playoffs. Kawhi Leonard arrives from San Antonio and will lead this team. Leonard was defensive player of the Year in 2017-18 and while his stay in Toronto may only be one year, I expect the Raptors to be in the top 5 of the East.  OVER the total.
