We have all heard the saying, the offense gets the glory, but the defense wins football games. If you are like me, then each Saturday you either plant yourself on your couch with some finger food, go to your local watering hole, or make it to your favorite sportsbook to watch college football from dawn to dusk.
As I do each weekend, I was watching games, this time in my living room. I was checking scores on both my phone and on my television when out of nowhere, something dawned on me that I had not realized sooner. I noticed so many top-rated teams were giving up tons of points. Being the inquisitive person I am, this piqued my curiosity, but I went on with my day as usual.
When Sunday came around, I was reading all about the prior day’s games and once again, I noticed quite a few highly-ranked teams had gotten burned for a lot of points the day earlier. Maybe some of them won, but they still allowed a lot of points.
I delved into it and what I found amazed me. Of the Top-25 teams that have played at least six games this season, only three rank in the Top-10 defensively: Marshall, Cincinnati, and BYU. You’d be surprised to find out that teams like Coastal Carolina and yes, even Oklahoma State statistically have better scoring defenses than the likes of Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn. Some Top-25 teams are so far down the list, it’s a wonder they are winning (Oklahoma, Miami-Fl, Texas A&M, and Iowa State).
Sports fans, my point being, it doesn’t matter how loaded you are offensively and how many points you put up. Eventually, you have got to stop teams defensively. You have got to contain or shut down your opponents from also lighting up the scoreboard. What’s going to happen in the coming weeks when some of these teams start facing each other? Moreover, what’s going to happen come the Bowl season or even the CFP?
Mark my words. You are going to see something strange start occurring very soon. You’re going to start seeing the teams with the stouter defenses start claiming victories over the high-flying offenses. When you see these matchups and the favorites are laying big numbers, you may want to start taking the points and chop down your book like a lumberjack. Offense may get the glory, but it is defense that gets the wins.
