The oddsmakers are without a doubt trying to steer bettors across the world to laying their money down on Notre Dame here. And why not?
This is a storied team with a winning tradition. They are led by a smart head coach. The team is loaded with stars on both sides of the ball. They own a top-25 offense and a top-15 defense. They beat a Clemson team back in early November that was previously unstoppable and finished the season with only one loss. That was to that same Clemson team that saw the return of Trevor Lawrence.
Even the handicapper in me initially leaned toward taking the points and the ‘dog here. Especially after Alabama did not cover against Florida in the SEC title game but the fact of the matter is, Alabama is just a much better team with a much better head coach.
Between their October 10 meeting with Mississippi and their December 19 matchup with Florida, the Crimson Tide defense allowed just 11.0 PPG against seven foes. They finished the campaign with the 20th ranked defense allowing a mere, 19.5 PPG.
At the beginning of the season, their secondary was vulnerable, but they tightened up and were outstanding. They also possess one of the best linebacking corps in college football.
On the offensive side of the ball, when they lost Jaylen Waddle, many thought they were in trouble. However, Mac Jones proved to be a superstar. He and receiver DeVonta Smith are the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy.
That would be enough but throw into the mix running back, Najee Harris and trust me, Notre Dame is in real trouble here. This is a team that has covered such high point spreads between 20 and 32 points six times this season alone.
If they win and play Clemson in the National Title game, head coach Nick Saban will not want Tigers head coach, Dabo Swinney to have a mental edge knowing his squad beat the Irish by a bigger margin.
This is a lot of points but so is the disparity between these two teams. Lay the wood and chop down your bookmaker here.
