Joe D’Amico tells Don Best’s loyal fans what to look out for in the new Conference play…
If the beginning of this unique college football season didn’t teach us the lesson and perhaps we didn’t learn it the last few weeks, the Big Ten and CUSA have kicked off their campaigns. We are certainly going to learn it as two more conferences begin this week. Rust is on both sides of a metal fence.
Without the usual first month of non-league, warm-up contests, many college football teams are starting the season a bit rusty. Not so much out of shape, mind you, but timing is way off. We are seeing more than our share of stupid mistakes. Injuries, and I mean season-ending injuries are rampant. Let’s not even get started with the widespread special teams issues.

Looking at the Big Ten over the first two weeks, we have seen underdogs not just cover, but win outright. Rutgers upended Michigan State. Indiana bested Penn State. Purdue took down Iowa. Maryland beat Minnesota. Michigan State outdid the heavily-favored Michigan. And Illinois covered (and almost won outright) against Purdue. We have experienced several similarities in the CUSA.
The PAC 12 is not going to be any different and neither is the MAC. You are going to see some fan favorites and popular teams come in here, laying big numbers because the oddsmakers know the general public is going to bet them.
Be careful, especially in the first few weeks. Be careful when laying wood in both of these leagues. Try to look for value anywhere you are going to lay your money down. If you are going to wager on these conferences right away, try to stay with those squads that have experienced returning vets and proven playmakers.
