In what alternate universe would you have ever dreamed that these two teams would have identical 1-3 records after one month of play and mirror each other statistics?
Both teams are averaging approximately 26 PPG while yielding about 34 PPG. Rutgers kicked off the 2020 campaign by beating Michigan State then put up a fight against a good Indiana team. They covered against the nation’s elite, Ohio State, only to lose a close one to Illinois.
It was the last contest that piques my curiosity. Greg Schiano’s Scarlet Knights allowed the Fighting Illini to rush for over 338 yards on 537 yards per carry. This is a team that hadn’t run for more than 242 yards in over two years. Michigan is a hot mess.
The one positive thing you can say about the Wolverines is that the offense has yet to turn the ball over. Head Coach, Jim Harbaugh once again read his team the riot act and came down on himself following last week’s 49-11 loss at the hands of the Badgers.
That was their third straight loss and no cover. The first two losses were to teams that on paper, they were far superior (Michigan State and Indiana). Quarterback, Joe Milton had back-to-back 300-yard performances in the losses to the Spartans and Hoosiers but couldn’t even reach the century mark in last week’s defeat.
At first glance, this is way too many points to lay for the Wolverines. If they do not win and win big here, you may just see the last of Jim Harbaugh and his huge contract. This is do or die for the proud coach. With Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State up next, if they don’t get a win here, this just might be the worst season in memory. I’m going with my gut here and playing Michigan to show some pride folks.
