In a rivalry which began in 1898, these two teams have met 112 times. Michigan has won and covered the last two meetings and I doubt the Paul Bunyan Trophy is in any jeopardy here. This is a lot of wood to lay, especially after playing only one game. It contradicts my opinion on judging teams solely from their previous performance.
After allowing Rutgers a conference victory after they had a string of 21 straight Big Ten defeats, Michigan State and their new head coach, Mel Tucker will go from the frying pan into the fire here. The Spartans turned the ball over seven times in their season-opening, 38-27 embarrassing loss to the Scarlet Knights.
In any regular season, you would think that this team would rebound here or at least cover the huge point spread. This isn't a regular season and the Michigan offense has two extremely talented running backs, Haskins and Charbonnet, who will terrorize the lax MSU defense. Wolverines quarterback, Joe Milton is solid and smart, way beyond his experience. He only made his first start in last week's, 49-24 beating over Minnesota.
Reports are that he is going to put up some impressive numbers and as importantly, he doesn't make too many miscues. Head coach, Jim Harbaugh certainly has no sympathy for any Big Ten opponents and has the reputation of running up scores against them.
The line officially opened at 23.5 and as of penning this analysis, has jumped up to 24.5. But over 65% of all bets as of Wednesday afternoon has come in on the 'dog here. So, why is the line going up you ask? Because the smarter and bigger money is coming in on the favorite.
MSU is 1-8 ATS L9 in conference play, 0-4 ATS L4 in October, and 2-8 ATS L10 overall. Michigan is 5-1 ATS L6 vs. the Big Ten, 7-1 ATS L8 in October, and 6-2 ATS L8 overall. Chop the wood with Michigan and watch them get the Paul Bunyan Trophy yet again.
I would prefer the -24 here and take the Wolverines. If you shop it, you can find it or at least buy it down off that hot number.
