The biggest game on the board in college football this week is the Clemson/Notre Dame matchup. This brings together the No.1 and the No. 4 ranked teams in the nation.
We all know that Trevor Lawrence, due to safety protocols, is sitting out this week. Guys, don’t overthink this matchup. Yes, the dynamics have changed a bit. Without their talented quarterback and leader, Clemson struggled to eke out a six-point victory as a 26-point favorite against Boston College last Saturday.
The media will make a big deal about the fact that Notre Dame is also undefeated and has a defense that allows only 10.3 PPG. Look at the Irish’s opponents. They have missed being a double-digit favorite by one-half point against every team they have faced (9.5-point fav vs. Pitt) this campaign. They haven’t faced any tough teams, let alone a defense like the one the Tigers possess.
The Clemson fast and ferocious stop-unit yields just 15.6 PPG in 2020. Yes, they have been double-digit favorites in every contest this season too. Head coach Dabo Swinney has faced and overcome every obstacle in his way at Clemson. True frosh quarterback, D.J. Uigalelei is a stud. Not only that, but he has one of the biggest and stoutest offensive lines in the nation. He also has the amazing ball-carrier, Travis Etienne. Oh yeah, he also had another full week to prep.
While I feel Notre Dame quarterback, Ian Book is without a doubt, talented, he just isn’t a superstar. He is not a playmaker. Remember, this is a team that couldn’t cover against Duke, FSU, or Georgia Tech, and only mustered 12 points in a no-cover vs Louisville.
If you recall, these teams met in the December 2018 Cotton Bowl when the Tigers mauled the Irish, 30-3, holding Book to 50% completions, 0 TDs, and 1 INT. Swinney isn’t going to jeopardize his top-ranking. He knows this is the game that will define his team this season.
Clemson is money, going 11-2 ATS L13 as a road fav, 19-7 ATS L26 in conference play, and 8-3 ATS L11 in the month of November.
I made this line without Lawrence under center, Clemson a fav of -7 to -8 points. This game won’t be decided by an FG, sports fans. I side with Swinney and the experienced, battle-tested Tigers to dominate the Irish here. Lay it and win it!
