BYU deserve credit
BYU at 7-0 and ranking ninth nationally is deserving of all their praise. This is a good, well-balanced team. The Cougars have just two games left on their schedule. This week at Boise State and a December 12 matchup with San Diego State at home.
This team has been ploughing opponents. Well, almost all opponents. UTSA played them tough, only losing by seven points as a 24-point underdog. BYU has only been a single-digit favorite twice this season and let’s be honest, Navy and Houston are not great teams. This outing is their first true test of 2020. The first time they have an evenly matched adversary in the trenches.
Sears a future star
BSU quarterback, Hank Bachmeier’s status is uncertain here. And head coach, Brian Harsin is keeping it close to the vest about naming his starter (as of penning this column). Backup quarterback, Jake Sears is a stud in the making.
He has stepped in for Bachmeier without missing a beat, putting up stellar numbers (291 yards passing, 82.6% completion rate, 3/0). The team has a solid backfield to keep the Cougars defense honest and a very stingy defense.
The X-Factor
Then there is the X-Factor here which is playing at home on the blue carpet at Albertsons Stadium. This is huge. Since early 2001, this team owns a home record of 116-8 SU and have beaten BYU on the carpet five straight meetings.
BYU is 0-4 ATS L4 in the month of November and 1-4 ATS L5 following an ATS loss. BSU is 7-1 ATS L8 as an underdog and 6-1 ATS L7 at home.
The Pick
Not knowing which quarterback will be at the helm for the Broncos is a disadvantage for the Cougars. I’ll take the FG with the home dog on the blue carpet here folks. Boise State.
