Flyers finally find winning formula

The Flyers are 8-1 in thier nine playoff home games.

It took a little longer than they would have liked, but the Philadelphia Flyers finally found the winners circle in this best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series by defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime. The win cut Chicago's series lead to 2-1.


The Flyers notched the victory as 130 home favorites, with the combined seven goals skipping ‘over' the 5 ½-goal closing total. The ‘over' has now cashed in two of the first three games of this series, with the favored home team winning on each occasion.

Most offshore sports books monitored by the Don Best odds product have opened Philadelphia as a 120 home favorite for Friday's Game 4, with the ‘total' set at 5 ½ ‘over' (minus 130).


The Blackhawks, trying to win their first Stanley Cup title since 1961, had two streaks snapped. They entered the contest with a seven-game overall winning streak and a seven-game road winning streak

The Flyers improved to 8-1 at home this postseason, including 6-0 in the last six.

Claude Giroux redirected a pass from teammate Matt Carle and scored at 5:59 of overtime to give the Flyers the come-from-behind win.

Philadelphia trailed 3-2 in the third period before Ville Leino notched the tying goal.

The Flyers got the game's first goal when Danny Briere received a pass from a falling down Scott Hartnell. The Blackhawks tied it early in the second period on a shot by defenseman Duncan Keith that deflected off of the stick of Flyers forward Jeff Carter.

Philly took the 2-1 lead later in the second period on a shot deflected by Hartnell that just barely sneaked over the goal line. The initial call on the ice was no goal, but after a review the goal was counted.

About eight minutes later, the Blackhawks tied it again on a long shot through traffic by Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel. Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton barely reacted as it flew by on his stick side.

Chicago's Patrick Kane got behind the Flyers' defense and scored on a breakaway at 2:50 of the third period to give his club its first lead of the game.

The Flyers had the best of the chances in the third period, but Chicago goaltender Antti Niemi played very well as the heat and the tension grew. The Flyers outshot the Blackhawks 15-4 in the third stanza, and by 31-25 over the first three periods.

The Blackhawks were 0-for-3 with the man advantage in Game 3 and now haven't scored in six power play opportunities during the first three games.

When Briere scored during a first-period man advantage, it gave the Flyers a power-play goal in each of the first three games against the Hawks. Hartnell also had a second-period power-play goal, giving Philadelphia four in the first three games.

Prior to Wednesday's 4-3 loss, Chicago was 5-0 in one-goal games during its current postseason run and 10-0 in games decided by two goals or less.

The Flyers were credited with 40 hits and have now out-hit the Blackhawks in each of the first three games. Dustin Byfuglien had seven of Chicago's 31 hits, the most of any player on either team.
