Paddy Power Refunds All Green Bay Backers

Some online sportsbooks refunded only those bettors outside the United States who wagered on the Green Bay Packers in their highly controversial 14-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. But Paddy Power made sure everybody was paid who bet on Green Bay, ensuring there was not a wrong side to take for sports bettors despite the fact that there was clearly a wrong call made by the replacement referees on the last play of the game that cost the team a victory.

Estimates for the financial swing created by the final play approach up to $250 million worldwide, according to ESPN sports business analyst Darren Rovell. The magnitude of the missed call is much greater though for bettors considering the game involved a highly public side in Green Bay, with nearly three out of every four bets coming in on the Packers (closing line was Green Bay -3). Meanwhile, Las Vegas sportsbooks needed to take a very different approach.

“No book in Vegas can do it (refund the game) without gaming approval,” said Jeff Sherman, head oddsmaker at the Las Vegas Hotel SuperBook. “All we can do is go by the definitive score since it’s what gaming regulates because the final score was posted. If we refund one game, it sets a dangerous precedent since anyone can then come up and complain if they feel wronged on any game during the season.”
