Notre Dame Fighting Irish: They needed three overtime periods and never came close to covering a 16½-point spread against a .500 Pitt team, but the Irish (9-0 straight-up, 5-4 against the spread) got the 29-26 win last week to remain undefeated. Notre Dame dominated the Panthers, outgaining them 522-308 in yardage but shot itself in the foot with three turnovers and needed two fourth-quarter touchdowns just to force overtime. That inconsistent offense coupled with their outstanding defense has resulted in seven of the nine games never reaching the total. The stop unit ranks second in the country in points allowed per game (11.7) and 10th in total defense (294.7 yards per game). Notre Dame has won the last three meetings vs. Boston College after losing six straight from 2001-08, and the last five matchups have failed to reach the total. The Irish struggled to a 16-14 home victory in 2011 as 24-point favorites.
Boston College Eagles: It has been a trying year for head coach Frank Spaziani and the Eagles (2-7 SU & ATS), who have now lost 15 of their last 21 games following last week's 28-14 setback at Wake Forest as 3½-point underdogs. The running game has all but disappeared from the BC offensive attack with less than 100 yards on the ground in the last three games combined, and the Eagles might be without leading rusher Andre Williams, who is questionable for Saturday with an abdominal injury (click to check updated college football injury report). Boston College's offensive line, which has allowed 21 sacks on the season, will also face pressure from the ND pass rush that has accumulated 26 QB drops (15th in nation). The Eagles have covered three of the last four collisions with the Fighting Irish, and three of the last four contests at Chestnut Hill have fallen short of the scoreboard hurdle.
