Akron Zips: It will take a substantial upset for the Zips (1-10 straight-up, 5-6 against the spread) to avoid ending the season on a nine-game losing skid. Akron dropped its 15th consecutive Mid-American Conference game 10 days ago with a 22-14 setback at home vs. UMass. The Zips were 14½-point favorites in the game, but they shot themselves in the foot with four interceptions and a fumble and could never overcome a 15-0 halftime deficit. Thanks to playing from behind so often, Akron has the 17th-rated passing attack in the nation (317.1 yards per game) as senior QB Dalton Williams has thrown for over 3,300 yards and 25 TD. However, 16 picks go along with those stats, and Zip opponents are scoring close to 36 points per game. These teams haven't met since 2008 when Akron got the 47-30 victory at home as 6½-point favorites, stopping a four-game series winning streak for Toledo.
Toledo Rockets: Consecutive losses to Ball State and at Northern Illinois eliminated the Rockets (8-3 SU, 7-4 ATS) from a shot at the MAC Championship game. Toledo could not maintain a 27-24 4th-quarter lead at NIU last Wednesday, eventually falling by a 34-27 count as 10-point road 'dogs. Coach Matt Campbell's squad is dealing with a couple of key injuries on the offensive side for this week's clash. Junior QB Terrance Owens is listed as probable with a foot issue and should play (click to check updated college football injury report), but junior tailback David Fluellen is questionable with an ankle injury. Fluellen rushed for 200 yards in the loss at Northern Illinois, and he is fourth in the country with 1,460 yards on the ground this season. The last two matchups in this series have jumped the total, but Toledo's most recent four contests have failed to reach the number. The Rockets have covered four of the last five games vs. Akron.
