West Virginia Mountaineers: The season opener for West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins' crew is also the tip-off event for the Old Spice Classic that will continue over the Thanksgiving holiday at Orlando's HP Field House. The Mountaineers will be working in a few new freshmen and transfers in their first Big 12 basketball campaign after losing last year's top scorers Kevin Jones (19.9 points per game) and Darryl Bryant (16.9 ppg). A big addition is center Aaric Murray, who was last seen toiling for La Salle, where he averaged 15.2 ppg and nearly eight boards per game in the 2010-11 season. Helping out in the paint are forwards Deniz Kilicli, the leading returning scorer at 10.7 ppg, and Keaton Miles. Sophomore guard Jabarie Hinds figures to man the point and form a strong backcourt along with Aaron Brown and Gary Browne. West Virginia was 8-9 outright in games away from home last season, including 4-6 in true road tilts.
Gonzaga Bulldogs: Coach Mark Few and the 'Zags (1-0 straight-up and against the spread) got to shake off some of their rust in an easy 103-65 triumph last Friday vs. Southern Utah. Freshman Przemek Karnowski paced six Bulldogs in double digits with 22 points off the bench, and Gonzaga literally stole the game from the Thunderbirds with 18 thefts as part of SU's 28 turnovers. Karnowski is trying to replace Robert Sacre in the paint, and the 'Dogs should have one of the best frontcourts in college basketball with center Sam Dower and forward Elias Harris returning to the fold after scoring 8.3 and 13.1 points per game, respectively, and combining for over nine boards per contest. The Mountaineers and Bulldogs have met just one time previously, and that came when the squads squared off in their NCAA Tournament opener last March in Pittsburgh. Gonzaga cruised to a 77-54 triumph as a 1½-point underdog, with the final falling a bucket short of the 133-point total.
