Interleague action lasts one more week

The Boston Red Sox captured nine of their first 11 interleague games this season.

Some MLB teams will be sorry to see interleague action end this week, while other clubs will say good riddance to playing teams in the other league. Most of the squads that can't wait for interleague play to end reside in the National League.

Prior to the Sunday night game between the Red Sox and Dodgers, the American League held a 91-76 advantage over its National League counterparts. Most of that success belonged to the Red Sox (9-2), White Sox (10-2), Tigers (9-3) and Rangers (9-3).

However, not all Junior Circuit clubs took part in the interleague dominance. Baltimore has dropped nine of 12 against the NL , while Cleveland is 4-8.

Guaranteed MLB picks

The poorest Senior Circuit interleague ledgers belonged to Pittsburgh (2-7), Houston (2-10) and Washington (3-9), while the best marks go to the Mets (9-3) and Braves (7-2).

The Mets might be hard pressed to continue their fine interleague record considering they play their next six games against the Tigers and Yankees. Detroit owns the best interleague record of any AL team since the 2006 campaign, while the Yankees own the best overall interleague mark.

The Yankees took two of three from the Mets at Yankee Stadium this past weekend thanks to Saturday's 5-3 win and Sunday's 4-0 shutout victory. All three games against the Mets dipped ‘under' the closing total.

The Tigers just completed an 8-1 homestand that saw them beat up on Pittsburgh, Washington and Arizona, three NL cellar dwellers. However, Detroit is just 13-19 on the road this season.

The Dodgers will attempt to exact some revenge on the Angels when they make the short trip to Anaheim to play the Halos in a three-game series beginning Tuesday. The two Los Angeles clubs met at Dodger Stadium earlier this month, with the Angels sweeping the three-game series by a combined 20-8 score.

The Angels' trio of Joel Pineiro, Scott Kazmir and Jered Weaver got the better of John Ely, Joe Saunders and Carlos Monasterios. The Angels were only favored in Weaver's start, with two of the three outings flying ‘over' the closing total.

The Cubs and White Sox will wait until the weekend to renew their rivalry, this time at U.S. Cellular Field. The Pale Hose captured the first two games at Wrigley Field earlier this month, as Mark Buehrle registered a 2-1 win after Jake Peavy had won the opener, 10-5. The Cubs salvaged the finale behind Ted Lilly's 1-0 shutout gem.

The White Sox closed as an underdog in all three games, with the final two outings dipping ‘under' the closing total.

Three other intrastate competitions continue over the weekend. The Royals will host the Cards, the Reds are home against the Indians and the Rangers host the Astros.

Two other intriguing matchups will take place over the weekend when the Giants host the Red Sox and the Dodgers renew an old rivalry against the Yankees.

Home and away

The Baltimore Orioles own baseball's poorest road record at 8-29 after Sunday's loss. The Pittsburgh Pirates were close behind at 9-25. Not surprisingly, both clubs occupied last place in their respective division.

Baltimore also tops the list of worst home ledgers at 11-21, with Cleveland not too far behind at 12-20. Surprisingly, the Milwaukee Brewers own the third poorest road mark at 11-19.

The Braves (24-7) and the Mets (24-10) have baseball's best home record. Ironically, the Tigers will travel to both cities this week as interleague action concludes.
