Miocic-Struve Heavyweight Battle Headlines UFC on FUEL TV 5

By: Matty Simo | Thursday, September 27, 2012

Nottingham, England will be the site of this week’s UFC on FUEL TV 5 event, featuring a number of local fighters and a main event pitting Dutch giant Stefan Struve against Croatian-American Stipe Miocic in a heavyweight matchup. The six main card fights will be televised on FUEL TV starting at 4:00 p.m. (ET) from Capital FM Arena, with five more preliminary card bouts streamed live on Facebook.com beginning at 1:30.

The unbeaten Miocic (9-0) opened as a moderate -275 favorite according to MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas but has since been bet down as low as -190 against Struve (24-5) via the Don Best odds screen. Miocic obviously does not have the same experience inside the Octagon as his opponent, but he has finishes in eight of his nine fights, including seven knockouts and one submission.

The 6-foot-11 Struve opened as a +205 underdog but has moved down as low as +170, and he has won his last three bouts since losing to Travis Browne in the first round via KO. In fact, Struve’s last three losses have all come by TKO or KO in the first round against good competition, including Roy Nelson and current heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos.

The co-main event is a welterweight matchup between Nottingham native Dan Hardy (24-10, 1 No-Contest) and Amir Sadollah (6-3). Hardy is one of 10 English fighters who will participate in the event and the most well-known of the bunch. After winning seven straight fights, he was rewarded with a welterweight title shot against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 111 and lost a unanimous decision, starting a four-bout skid that ended with a first-round KO of Duane Ludwig at UFC 146 on May 26.

Like Miocic, Sadollah has nowhere near the same experience, and he entered The Ultimate Fighter 7 without a professional fight under his belt before going on to win the competition. However, his MMA career has been up-and-down since then with a 5-3 mark and six of those fights ending with decisions.

Hardy opened at -165 against Sadollah (+135) and has seen bettors back him on his home turf up to -200 at some sportsbooks.
