GSP Returns To Defend Welterweight Title At UFC 154

The highly-anticipated return of welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre to the Octagon will take place this Saturday in his hometown of Montreal when he fights interim champ Carlos Condit to unify the titles in the main event at UFC 154. The top contender for the winner’s belt may also be decided in the co-main event as Martin Kampmann battles Johny Hendricks in another welterweight matchup, one of five main card fights that will be broadcast live on Pay-Per-View from the Bell Centre starting at 10:00 p.m. (ET).
St-Pierre (22-2) has been off since earning a unanimous decision victory against Jake Shields at UFC 129 on April 30, 2011. The 31-year-old French Canadian fighter suffered a torn ACL late last year, preventing him from meeting Nick Diaz and leading to Condit facing Diaz for the interim title on February 4. GSP has defended his title six times but has not stopped an opponent since scoring a TKO of B.J. Penn at UFC 94 on January 31, 2009. His last four bouts have all resulted in dominant UD wins.
Condit (28-5) has won his last five fights since losing a split decision to Kampmann on April 1, 2009. He had stopped his previous three opponents (Kim Dong-Hyun, Dan Hardy and Rory MacDonald) by knockout before beating Diaz and has 26 finishes overall (13 via TKO/KO and 13 submissions) among his 28 wins. “The Natural Born Killer” had won the WEC welterweight title as well before falling to Kampmann in his UFC debut.
Speaking of Kampmann (20-5), he knocked out Jake Ellenberger at The Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale on June 1 to run his winning streak to three following back-to-back losses to Shields and Diego Sanchez. His opponent Hendricks (13-1) has won four in a row since experiencing his only loss to Rick Story via UD at the TUF 12 Finale. However, the winner between Kampmann and Hendricks is not guaranteed a title shot because UFC president Dana White would love nothing more than to pair GSP up with middleweight champ Anderson Silva in a superfight if he beats Condit.
Following are the opening UFC 154 odds on these two fights from MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas...
