Beasley, Kansas State too much for Mayo, USC
OMAHA, Nebraska (Ticker) -- Freshman Michael Beasley and Kansas State's dominant rebounding just overpowered Southern California.
Beasley had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Bill Walker added 22 points as the 11th-seeded Wildcats punished sixth-seeded USC inside for an 80-67 victory in the first round of the Midwest Regional on Thursday.
Kansas State (21-11) outrebounded the Trojans, 44-27, and had 21 on the offensive end.
Walker scored 17 of his points in the first half as Kansas State held a 37-27 lead at the break.
USC (21-12) came back to take a brief 48-47 lead with just over 13 minutes to play, but the Wildcats later went on a 22-7 run to put the game away at 76-60 with 1:55 remaining.
O.J. Mayo led the Trojans with 20 points and five assists on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor.
